چکیده

The Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonance −kzvz= f between fast ions and shear Alfvén waves is experimentally investigated , wave frequency; kz, axial wavenumber; vz, fast-ion axial speed; f, fast-ion cyclotron frequency . A test particle beam of fast ions is launched by a Li+ source in the helium plasma of the LArge Plasma Device LAPD W. Gekelman, H. Pfister, Z. Lucky, J. Bamber, D. Leneman, and J. Maggs, Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 2875 1991 , with shear Alfvén waves SAW amplitude B /B up to 1% launched by a loop antenna. A collimated fast-ion energy analyzer measures the nonclassical spreading of the beam, which is proportional to the resonance with the wave. A resonance spectrum is observed by launching SAWs at 0.3–0.8 ci. Both the magnitude and frequency dependence of the beam-spreading are in agreement with the theoretical prediction using a Monte Carlo Lorentz code that launches fast ions with an initial spread in real/velocity space and random phases relative to the wave. Measured wave magnetic field data are used in the simulation. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2996323

Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonance of fast ions with circularly polarized shear Alfvén waves

The Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonance between fast ions and shear Alfvén waves SAWs has been experimentally investigated with a test-particle fast-ion Li+ beam launched in the helium plasma of the Large Plasma Device Gekelman et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 62, 2875 1991 . Leftor right-hand circularly polarized SAWs are launched by an antenna with four current channels. A collimated fast-ion energ...

Particle simulation of Alfvén waves excited at a boundary

A particle-in-cell (PIC) code has been developed that is capable of describing the propagation of compressional and shear Alfvén waves excited from a boundary. The code is used to elucidate the properties of Alfvén wave cones radiated from sources having transverse scale comparable to the electron skin depth. Good agreement between theoretical predictions and simulation results is found over a ...

Excitation of shear Alfvén waves by a spiraling ion beam in a large magnetoplasma.

Generation of shear Alfvén waves by the Doppler-shifted ion-cyclotron-resonance (DICR) of a spiraling H(+) ion beam with magnetic fluctuations in a dual-species magnetized plasma with He(+) and H(+) ions has been investigated on the Large Plasma Device. The ambient plasma density and electron temperature were significantly enhanced by the beam. The Alfvén waves were left-handed polarized and tr...

Shear Alfvén waves in a magnetic beach and the roles of electron and ion damping

Experiments are performed in the Large Plasma Device ~LaPD! @Gekelman et al., Rev. Sci. The waves are excited by modulating a field-aligned electron current drawn to a disk antenna with a radius on the order of the elec...

Observation of compressional Alfvén eigenmodes (CAE) in a conventional tokamak

Fast-ion instabilities with frequencies somewhat below the ion cyclotron frequency occur frequently in spherical tokamaks such as the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX). NSTX and the DIII-D tokamak are nearly ideal for fast-ion similarity experiments, having similar neutral beams, fast-ion to Alfvén speed vf /vA, fast-ion pressure, and shape of the plasma but with a factor of two differ...
